Mr and Mrs.P. Hewison, who> have resided at Gladstone for the past 23 years, are leaving the district on Saturday next to reside at Christchurch.
Sir Harry Lauder is suffering from cerebral thrombosis and uraemia. A doctor attending him said his condition was very serious. He is 79 years of age.
At yesterday’s meeting of the West Coast Land Development Committee members stood, as a mark of respect to tiie Mulcare family, in their recent bereavement.
Mr J. P. Lewin was re-elected president by an overwhelming majority at the annual conference in Wellington of the Public Service Association. It will be his fifth term. Mr J. H. Tuohy and Mr L. G. Anderson were elected vice-presidents and Mr K. Menzies was re-elected general treasurer.
The death occurred at Auckland recently of a former matron of the Grey River Hospital, Miss Corbetta Lord. She took her nursing training at Vreymouth, and after leaving for a period, returned to take the position of matron. She suffered a breakdown in health in 1932, and after remaining at the hospital as a patient for some time, left for Auckland, wher e she had since resided.
A Reuter cable from Pome states: Popo Pius the Twelfth, Who is now 73. is enjoying his first complete holiday for 10 years at his summer residence, Castel Candolfo. After the strain of the past year, beginning wilh Cardinal Mindszenty’s trial, and culminating in the Vatican’s excommunication decree against Communists, his doctors advised His Holiness to take a brief rest.
