U.S. DIVER FAILS IN ATTEMPT TO REACH 6000 FEET

NEW YORK, Aug. 15 A marine explorer, Otis Barton, made an attempt to |descend six thousand feet into the ocean off Santa Cruz Island, California, for a world record dive to-day. In this he failed. Barton was lowered to a depth of 2,300 feet, but then there was generator trouble on his barge at the surface. This left him without lights in his steel Benthoscope. Barton, aged forty-eight, is an engineer, of Boston. He ordered his associates to haul him up. He said that the worst part of his dive was a feeling that the diving bell was tipping over—a sensation caused by the lack of oxygen. He added that he would make another attempt when the trouble was fixed.
