This .was 15.4 sec faster than the record set by Bill Smith (United States) in 1944. Robert Gibe, of Detroit, won the 100 metres freestyle event. He slipped past Wally Ris, the American star, and Yoshihiro Hamafuchi, of Japan, who were battling for the lead in the last 30 yards. Gibe’s time was 58.2 sec. Joe Verduer of Brighton Club, won the medley in 3min 53.75ec, bettering the American record by one-fifth of a second, set by Harry Holiday in 1946.
