Mining Districts’ Community Centre Hold Concert

At Denniston on August 12 there was a large assemblage at the flpst concert on a district scale, held by the Buller Mining Districts’ Community Centres. Buses brought performers and audience from as far afield as Seddonville, Stockton and Westport. Many people were attracted by an excellent display _ of arts and crafts, the work of various classes conducted by Mr John Fuller. The Denniston Boys’ Band had the opportunity to show off their new uniforms as they played outside the hall. All available seats were filled, and latecomers were obliged to stand at. the back, although extra seating had been provided in the aisles. Although this was a new type of concert, and lasted three hours, the audience enjoyed the. whole programme, which was designed to bring to their notice activities which have come into being as a result of Community Centre work. The programme was carried through without a hitch, despite the fact that no full rehearsals had been possible beforehand. The highlight was a performance of massed choirs. Mr Delaney has accomplished a great deal musically in the district with his training of small groups in isolated townships and bringing them together in a massed choir. At the interval Mr Tom Muir (organiser for the Community Centres) thanked all who contributed to the concert and arts and crafts display. The evening’s entertainment was a real indication of the valuable contribution the Centres were making to the social life of the community. The concert concluded with an enthusiastic community sjng conducted by Mr Delaney. The' thanks ,of the executive of the Buller Mining Districts’ Community Centres is extended to all who gave willingly of their time to make the concert a huge success, and special thanks to the Granity Community Centre for their efforts. A successful dance was held after the concert, music being supplied by Mrs Swan.
