CALAIS, Aug. 13. Jose Cortinas. a thirty-two-year-oid Cuban, abandoned an attempt to swim the English Channel after completing half the distance in six hours He returned to Calais. He sta ' / from Can Gris Nez_ at G.M.T. 11.45 p.m. on Wednesday. He left the water at 5.45 a.m. G.M.T. today. Cold adverse winds rolled heavy waves directly into his face. He also suffered from cramp.
