COUNCIL WOULD NOT TAKE MEN IF AVAILABLE, SAYS MAYOR

Cr. P. Blanchfield at last evening’s meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council, asked, if K) good men were available for employment, whether the council would accept them, seeing that the engineer had said he did not have sufficient men. The Mayor, Mr F. F. Boustridge, said the council would not take them as it would mean finding another £6OOO per annum, and where was it going to come from. If the council could get the money it could get the men, he added. . • . , , “Cr. Blanchfield is quite entitled to his opinion, but it is rather an isolated one,” said the Mayor. Cr. Blanchfield: “No it happens quite often.” It was decided to advertise for a man to sit as the council’s representative on the local valuation committee. Cr. Boustridge said that ony reputable citizen would be eligible. He would be able to watch the council’s interests when assessment claims were being disputed. A man with a knowledge of the town would be needed. ~ Cr. F. Sadler asked who would have to pay the fees. The Mayor said he was not sure, but he thought the Court would pay the fees. ’ The Department of Housing Construction wrote acknowledging the names of McKane Place and Masters Street.

Mrs C. McKane wrote, thanking the council for the naming of McKane Place after her late husband, Mr A. H. McKane, who was wellknown in civic affairs of the town. The Public Trustee wrote in regard to the Reduction Common Fund interest of three and one-eighth per cent to three per cent. The letter was received.

The R.oyal Humane Society wrote thanking the council for a donation. Mr A. W. Laughton wrote asking permission and assistance in erecting a pailing fence near the Cobden Reserve in Ashmore Avenue, and Mr M. H. Eatwell wrote asking financial assistance for a fence he had erected the back of which was on the children’s playground in Cobden. Both letters were referred to the Reserves Committee.

Four Monroe St. residents wrote requesting footpaths and drainage along the frontage of their residences.

The engineer said that the work had already been commenced and it was decided to advise the residents accordingly. Present at the meeting were the Mayor, Mr F. F. Boustridge; Crs H. Hutchinson, W. W. Parkinson, G. R. Harker, J. E. Stokes, F. Sadler, P. Blanchfield; Messrs A. J. Fairmaid (engineer), and N. E. Clemens (town clerk).
