NILE HYDRO PLAN FOR UGANDA
LONDON, May 19.
A scheme to produce hydro-elect -ic power and control the waters of the Nile at Owen Falls, in Uganda, would make possible the greatest development in that area, said the Foreign Secretary, Mr Ernest Bevin, in the House of Commons to-day. Giving details of the construction of a dam at Owens Falls, Mr Bevin said tha tthe British and Egyptian Governments had agreed that although tiie dam would be administered and maintained by the Uganda Electricity Boar.d, the. Egyptian Government would regulate discharges from the dam. The scheme is expected to take 20 years to complete. It involves the construction of two gigantic dams to harness the waters of the Blue Nile and the White Nile. The scheme is believed to be the biggest ever attempted and will provide sufficient water to increase the cultiv-atable land in Egypt and the Sudan by millions of acres.
