U.S. HOUSE DECIDES TO ENLARGE AIR FORCE

(Received March 24, 1.0 a.m.). WASHINGTON, March 22.

The House of Representatives today over-rode President Truman’s Budget recommendations and overwhelmingly approved a Bill authorising the building up of seventy groups in the Air Force. The House also approved the existing manpower ceilings of the Air Force and Army. The Army now has a ceiling of 837,000 officers and men, while the Air Force has a ceiling of 502,000. President Truman recommended only 48 groups in the Air Force and an army of 677,000. He does not oppose a larger Air Force, or high manpower ceilings, but he feels that the country cannot afford them this year. The Bill now goes to the Senate, where it is expected to get a favourable reception.
