Soldier Sentenced to Death Faces Assault Charge
P.A. um.oANUI, 2.L.-J1 23 A man who uaiiiitttci t.ia. while serving overseas with the new Zealand forces, he was convicted of murder and sentenced to death, pleadec not guilty in the Police Court at Marton to common assault on a gir? sixteen. He was convicted and sentenced to two months' imprisonment witn n.aru labour. He was Isaac Johnson, married, of Marton Junction. Under cross-examination by Sergeant V. B. Arnold, defendant admitted that, when serving with the forces, he was convicted of murder, and sentenced to death. That sentence was commuted to lite imprisonment, ano he was returned to New Zealand to serve his time. He was released last year. He also admitted, under crossexamination, that he had twice before been convicted of assault in Pending in 1938 and in Marton in 1940.
