FLOOD PROTECTION FOR TOBACCO AREAS

Authority for the Tobacco Board to make contributions toward the cost. of flood protection or other works intended to benefit tobacco-growing districts is contained in amendments made to the Tobacco Growing Industry Regulations. The Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer, said certain tobacco-growing areas in the Motueka-Riwaka district had been subject to flooding. This not only represented a danger to the tob-acco-growing industry, but had also hampered its possible extension. The Government had agreed to undertake a flood protection scheme at an estimated sapital cost of about £lOO,000. It had been agreed that the Tobacco Board and the Nelson Catchment Board would jointly contribute £25,000 toward the capital cost.
