SEAMEN DESERTERS COMPLAIN ABOUT SHIP
NEW PLYMOUTH, Mar 23. “We had no fresh vegetables between Ocean Island and New Plymouth. We had no potatoes, not even dehydrated ones, and no Lresh water,’’ declared a seaman apprentice Colin Michael Banks, aged 18, who was charged in the New Plymouth Court today with desertion from the Titanbank at New Plymouth on March 3. The statement by Banks and another deserter, convicted yesterday, were refined by Mr Oliver shipping manager for Newton King Ltd. agents of the company who .said from the floor of the court that r ne men on the Titanbank lived probably better than did the average person ashore. “If the men’s quarters are dirty it is probably because the crew refuses to keep them clean,” added Mr Oliver. Banks was convicted and sentenced to one month’s imprisonmen’ and ordered to return to the Titan-; bank if the ship berths in New Zealand within the month. A similar sentence was passed yesterday on John Moffatt, a seaman aged 23. who alleged that the ship was over-run with cockroaches and weevils.
