WILL HIGHER WAGES CAUSE DISCONTENT ?
P.A. WELLINGTON, March 23 Judge Tyndall asked the witness: “Is there any remedy other than increasing wages, for allaying workers’ discontent?” Professor Tocker replied: “Increasing wages may allay the present discontent but increase it iir the immediate future.”
Increased production, he added, was a remedy for the economic hangover of the night before. Wages, he contended, were the most important factor in rising costs. The Federated Farmers’ case against a rise was presented at length by Mr D. L. Martin. He will be cross-examined to-morrow morning, after which Mr H. F. Rutland will present a summary of his submissions. , , . Mr K. McL. Baxter has asked for an adjournment of the court until next Tuesday to enable him to consider the evidence already presented, and he is then expected to make his reply. ...
