QUESTION FOR N.Z. ABOUT LIQUOR IN SAMOA

The U.N. Trusteeship Council today considered the annual report on Western Samoa, which is under New Zealand administration. Mr J. F. H. Grattan, the special representative of the administration, was questioned bv Mr Victor Capio (Philippines) and M. A. A. Soldtov (Soviet) on social conditions, trade, and general administration. Mr Carpio asked Sir Carl Berendsen (New Zealand representative) whether all spirits and liquors imported to the territory were used exclusively for medical and industrial pur noses. , , Sir Carl said liquor had medicinal properties for those not accustomed to the climate. Liquor helped Europeans to overcome the detrimental effect of the hot, humid climate of Western Samoa. .
