COLONIAL SUGAR CO. EXPECTS SUPPLIES TO BE INCREASED

P.A.. AUCKLAND, February 25. There were signs that the supplies of sugar might be better in the next few weeks, said a spokesman for the Colonial Sugar Refining Company, Ltd. Deliveries had been normal during this week, he added. In the meantime, the quota system, which is ' based on the average purchases made by different . firms between January and June last year, would remain in force.

The company, he said, was sending shipments to the South Island as shipping opportunities offered.. However, it was too early to judge the full effects of the quota system. A representative of the master grocers said that the shortage was affecting sugar consumers just at the time when sugar was wanted foi’ bottling and jam making.

He described the sugar shortage as “grim”. He said that some grocers had not had any sugar for as much as ten days. It was a Dominion-wide shortage. He added that there was a time lag in the deliveries to be overtaken, and he thought that this was a big difficulty. He saw no immediate prospect of relief for the housewife.
