TESTING ROTORUA’S THERMAL POWERS

WELLINGTON, Feb 25.

Air-borne magnetic survey equipment ordered by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research for survey operations in connection with the proposed scheme designed to utilise power from geo-thermal sources in the Rotorua district, is expected to arrive in New Zealand shortly, the Minister in charge of the department, Hon. T. H. McCombs, announced to-day.

The Minister said it was confidently expected that the use of this equipment would enable an accurate map to be made of the location of hot' rocks beneath the surface of the earth in shorter time and also more accurately than would be the case if the magnetic survey was conducted on the earth’s surface.

Mr McCombs added that the preliminary work in the area by the geologists and vulcanologists was continuing, while opportunity had been taken of the Pacific Science Congress for an informal exchange of meetings and an exchange of views with overseas scientists.
