ALPS VICTIM WAS FORMER GOVERNMENT STATISTICIAN
WELLINGTON, Feb 25.
Mr James Butcher, the Wellington tramper who died at the Hooker hut, in the Mount Cook district, as the result of head injuries suffered in a fall down the mountainside, was the Government statistician from 1932 until some three years ago, when he retired.
Mr Butcher was a. foundation member of the Tararua Tramping Club. A Timaru message says that the body was brought from the Hooker hut' to the Hermitage at. 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon, and was transported to Timaru to-day. The rain cleared sufficiently to allow a rescue party to bring the body out by stretcher.
