ATHLETICS MOVE TO FORM CASH ATHLETIC CLUB MADE IN GREYMOUTH

ATHletics club made in greymouth Although a large number of competitors regularly enter for cash com-

petition at the sports meetings held by West Coast sports clubs, no concerted move to organise a cash athletics club in the province has been made until recently, and the outcome was a meeting held last evening, when a provisional committee was set up with a view to forming a club. There was a fair attendance at the meeting, over which Mr N. C. Messenger presided. Promise of support was received from a number of athletes in the country districts, with offers of assistance in competitions and organisation. The general opinion expressed at the meeting was that solid ground work could be done during the current season, so that the question of competitions could be finalised for next season with the assistance of sports clubs which conducted professional events.

Mr T. F. McKenzie explained that a wrong impression that the West Coast Rugby League had sponsored, or wished to sponsor the formation of a cash athletics club had gone abroad. This was contrary to fact, as the proposal was solely the work of those enthusiasts who considered that a club would form a useful adjunct to sports clubs throughout the district. Following general discussion, it was decided to form a provisional committee, and the following temporary officials were elected: President, Mr T. F. McKenzie; secretary, Mr N. C. Messenger; executive, Messrs F. Williams, G. B. Fiveash, V. Messenger, M. Sheldon, R. Beilby and A. Greaney. The committee was deputed to consider plans for the formation of the club and to select the date of the next meeting.
