FALSE BRIDEGROOM SENT TO JAIL

FIELDING, Feb. 24

A bridegroom who failed to turn up for his wedding at Feilding recently was sentenced to three months gaol by Mr A. Coleman, S.M., in the Feilding Magistrate’s Court on _ acharge of making a false declaration for the purpose of procuring a certificate under the Marriage Act. He falsely represented himself as a bachelor. He was Thomas Gover, aged 27 years. . On the day following that fixed foi the wedding, accused wrote to the police confessing that he was a married man and that was the reason why he had not. appeared at the church. Sergeant A. M. Harding told the court that accused was at present serving a month’s gaol for converting a car at Levin. He was an unstable type with a list of previous convictions. , “You acted in a very cruel way as far as the girl was concerned. It. would have been better not to have sought to have got out of this trouble by blackening the character of this unfortunate girl,” commented the Magistrate.
