STEAMER CAPSIZES NEAR SYDNEY

Some of Crew Lost (Rec. 7.45). SYDNEY, February 23. A coastal steamer, the Bombo, of 539 tons, with a crew of fourteen, capsized and sank in heavy seas off Wollongong late last night. She was making a sixty mile trip from Kiama to Sydney. Fears for her safety were held, after she used her emergency radio last night to advise that she was hove to, thirty miles from Sydney, in stormy conditions. Two seamen who were rescued said that after the ship developed a list so dangerous they could not stand, on the decks, the captain issued the order: “Every man for himself!” The ship turned turtle and sank before all of the crew could jump clear. The ship was carrying a load of blue metal.
