WAIUTA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent)

Twenty-five members of the Reefton Workingmen’s Club, comprising a cricket team and a 45’s team were royally entertained on Saturday at Waiuta by the local Workingmen’s Club, the committee headed by Messrs Dick Davis and Dick Curnow, spared nothing to their efforts to please the guests. Liquid refreshments were plentiful, members wives supplying afternoon eats, sandwiches, cakes etc., the visitors expressing much appreciation of the manner in which they were catered for, especially at lunch by Mrs McCabe. An interesting game of cricket was played, which Waiuta lost, and with it a coveted trophy, the Chandler Cup. Waiuta batted first and scored 66 runs— Morgan, c Shutt, b Scott 0; Wynne, b Scott 0; Breslin, b Scott 18; Downes, b Scott 1; Robb, c Shutt, b Scott 6; Neilson, b Cartright 9; McKane, run out 0; Jones, c and b Cartright 20; Reeves, c Brazil, b Scott 0; Parkinson, run out 12; Naylor, not out 0. Reefton replied with 'B2—Scott, b Morgan 18; Shutt, c Naylor, b Robb 4; Bissett, c Jones, b Morgan 6; Cartright, not out 44; D. Scott, c Breslin, b Jones 1; Forman, run out 0; Ladner, run out 0; Hunt, not out 9. The match could be described as the “lost ball” match. Cartright hit a six, and as far as is known the ball has not yet been recovered. The game was then abandoned, Reefton winning the Cup. All adjourned to the club-rooms where a very interesting forty-lives tournament was played. The Waiuta team played their “national” game with determination —plus many trumps—and outclassed the opposition. thus retaining the Elgin Cup, the final score being Waiuta 10 points : Reefton 5 points. Mr E. Chandler, with a few well-chosen words presented the cup to Mr S. Hunt (captain of the Reefton cricket team). Mr C. Chandler (manager of the Reefton team) suitably replied. Mr S. P. Williams (President of Waiuta Workingmen’s Club) in a neat speech pre-' sented the Elgin Cup to Mr J. Naylor (skipper of the formidable Waiuta forty-fives team). Mr R. Irving, on behalf of the Reefton members, thanked all concerned for the very happy day they had all enjoyed so much. Mr E. Riley( secretary of the Reefton Club) spoke on the same lines, but was very disappointed that his teams did not “win the double.” Il is generally thought at Waiuta that if their players would do as much cricket practice as they do forty-fives practice, Reefton would have got no cup! In the very near future Waiuta are to be the guests of the Reefton Club, and it is confidently expected that the Chandler Cup will return to Waiuta on that day.
