CRICKET Ceylon Loses to West Indies
The West Indies won the first test against Ceylon by an innings and 22 runs. Prior Jones, the West Indies fast bowler, created havoc among Ceylon’s batsmen. He took all six wickets to-day at a personal cost of only 23 runs. Rodrigo and Gunasekera made a fifth-wicket stand of 117, but Jones broke the partnership and then dismissed the remainder of the side. West Indies declared their, first innings closed at two for 462 (Rae 116, Walcott 125 not out, Weekes 133 not out). Ceylon in its first innings scored 122 and in their second innings at .stumps yesterday had lost four wickets for 119. The innings closed for 318 (Rodrigo not out 135, Gunasekera 72, Kretser 41, Jones six lor 23,Gomez one for 71, Trim two for 44, Goddard one for 67). SHEFFIELD SHIELD South Australia face an outright defeat in. their Shiffield Shield match against Queensland. Don Tallon could not keep wickets for Queensland because of an injured thumb. Scores.— South Australia, first innings, 177; second innings 195 for seven (Lewis, 54). Queensland, first innings, 335 (O’Neili four for 66).
