CROQUET FIRST DAY’S PLAY IN WEST COAST TOURNEY
Under ideal weather conditions, the first day’s play in the West Coast Croquet Association’s annual tournament at Makura Club’s greens, made excellent progress yesterday, the end of the play finding that the Association was well ahead in the handicap doubles, and had completed one of the championship doubles matches. After heavy rain over the weekend, the greens were heavy in the morning, but they dried rapidly yesterday and were soon in perfect order. The tournament will continue throughout this week and concludes early next week. ' The president of the Association, Mrs F. Higgins, officially declared the tournament open. Yesterday’s results were:—
Championship doubles. —Mesdames Nottle and Slee (Westport), defeated Mesdames Wilson and Howard (Runanga), 26-14. Handicap Doubles. —First round: Mesdames Nicholls (Christchurch) and W. Pring ' (Greymouth) defeated Mesdames J. Shannon and M. Keating (Greymouth) 26-12; Mesdames J. Wilson and T. Howard (Runanga) defeated Mesdames Bull and Brownlees (Christchurch) 26-21; Mrs Hawke and Miss McDowell (Ashburton) defeated Mesdames F. Higgins and R. Ramage (Cobden) 26-13; L. Mercer and H. Prescott (Greymouth) defeated Mesdames Martin and Hosking 26-15; Mrs Hooper and Miss McKnight (Greymouth) defeated Mrs Brunt (Nelson) and Mrs Dickie (Christchurch), 26-14.
