ROME’S DEFENDERS CLEARED BY COURT
(Rec 80) - ROME, Feb. 21. A 'Military Court cleared General Mario Roata, former Italian Chief of Staff and five other Generals and two Colonels on a charge of failure to defend Rome against the Nazis on September 8, 1943, after the armistice was signed The Court ruled that charges made of omission to adopt measures to ensure military defence, of abandonment of command, of surrender, disobedience of orders, and cowardice, were not crimes under Italian law.
