Westport Labour Ball

The decorations of the Theatre Royall reflected the good taste and energy of the working committee of the Westport branch of the Labour Party. For the opening ball of the 1949 season, the hall was festooned with coloured lights, streamers and balloons. Tre stage was set as a reception room and was tastefully arranged with the N.Z.L.P. sign in a prominent position. Many visitors from country branches were present and Swan's Archestra supplied sparkling music, with extras by Mrs J. McLoy.

The" official reception party were the Hon. C. F. Skinner, with members of his party.—Mr N. McCarthy and Miss J. Folley; the Mayor, Mr J. M. Robertson, Mrs P. McClean (acting Mayoress), Mr and Mrs J. HAdams, Mrs H. Swan, Mr L. O’Neil (Master of Ceremonies) and Mrs T. Methven (Matron of Honour). The young ladies pressented were: Misses 'Patricia Gillovic, Joy Swan, Evelyn Adams, Claire Murphy, Betty Finlay, Shirley Duncan, Eisma de Friez, Jean Smith, Mary Arenson, Marie Christiansen, Gwen Dixon and Audrey Thompson. The Mayor welcomed Hon. Air Skinner and party to Westport, saying he felt sure he would appreciate the beauty and grace of the young Westport women. Mr Skinner, in reply, said that no duty of a Cabinet Minister could be more pleasant, and he would be only too happy to act in the same capacity if asked to do so. He spoke of the good fortune of all present to be livinng in New Zealand at this time, when so many young people in Europe were hungry and cold. He trusted that the young people would go on to work for the general good of their country.
