GREYMOUTH BRANCH OF NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN MEETS
The Greymouth Branch of the National Council of Women held its first meeting for 1949 recently at St. John’s fllall, Mrs Lowes presiding (in the absence of the president), and on her motion a vote of condolence with Mrs Stewart in her recent bereavement was passed, members (standing in silence. Mrs Lowes welcomed Mrs Long, the new Salvation Army delegate. Members noted with satisfaction a reply from the Borough Council to the effect that no action would be taken with regard to the proposed convenience until a public statement had been made.
A report on the need for foster homes was received from the Child Welfare Department. A small subcommittee was appointed to go into the matter, with a view to finding out the prospects of obtaining such homes in this locality. The forthcoming visit of Mrs H. J. Forde, J.P., Dominion president, was discussed. It was decided to accept the generous offer of the Greymouth Women’s Institute to set aside part of the afternoon function which they had already planned, so that National Council delegates and members might have the opportunity of hearing Mrs Forde, who has had long service in many women’s organisations, notably the Society for the Protection pf Women and Children. Mrs Forde has also done yeoman work in connection with standardising the size and quality of goods offered to the housewife, and is still carrying on this campaign.
