TENNIS WELLINGTON’S LEAD FOR WILDING SHIELD

P.A. WELLINGTON, February 18. One crushing defeat in the doubles, and a third set loss by A. McCardle to L M. Roach in the singles, were Wellington's only reverses in defence of the Wilding Shield tennis trophy against Hawke’s Bay and Waikato. The top doubles pair, L. P. Roach and M Wakefield, beat McCardle and J\ Hamilton for the loss of only one game. Wellington won four matches to Waikato’s two, nine .sets to fiye, and 71 games to 59. Tilden Gaoled for Sex Offence (Rec. 8.30). SAN FRANCISCO. Feb 17 William Tilden, aged 56, a former world tennis champion, was sentenced to-day to one year’s imprisonment for molesting a boy aged 16. The Judge commented: “I hope sincerely you will learn your lesson this time”.’ , Tilden was sentenced on February 7 to one year’s gaol for violating his probation on a previous conviction of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The sentences will be concurrent.
