THE TURF Falonbridge Favoured for Hokitika Handicap

Faites Vos Jeux Sprint Selection

If favoured with fine weather, the Westland Racing Club, should have a most successful opening day for their summer meeting. Well balanced fields are carded to appear, and, with the track in excellent order, some interesting racing should be witnessed. ■ A winner on the course’ 12 months ago, Falconbridge will find the long straight to his liking, and he may prove one of the hardest to beat in the principal race of the day, the Hokitika Handicap. Moneylender and Night Owl, which were successful m their divisions of the Hannan Memorial at Omoto over the same distance, should again run well, and appear likely to provide most opposition to Falconbridge. Of the sprinters that raced at the Greymouth Jockey /Club’s meeting, nothing impressed more than Faites Vos Jeux. A quick beginner, turning tracks do not trouble him, and he should be one of the favourites for the Summer Handicap over six furlongs. An interesting acceptor is Bambalina, which won very easily among the hacks at Omoto. A brilliant galloper, the Kincardine horse will have to be at his best to hold off Faites Vos Jeux. Theocritus and Dress Reheasal, both capabl? over short courses, read best of the others. Betting will be under the win and place system. The following runners may give a good account of themselves: —

Novice Stakes: Valley Gold, Cerisette, Pym’s Pride. February Trot: Gold Silk, Almeta, Wrackdale.

Thompson Hack: Finigin, Salmarie, Morning Watch. Hokitika Handicap: Falconbridge, Moneylender. Night Owl. Williams Handicap: Open Sky, Jinny Jinks, Cinereous. Gay Knight in Form for New Brighton Cup

Fields will be big at New Brighton to-morrow when the feature race will be the New Brighton Handicap of two miles. Although he disappointed his admirers at Addington last week Gay Knight is expected to make an improved showing on a grass course, and this may be his opportunity. Other fancied candidates are Victory Globe, Premier Royal, Wayfarer and Prince Hall, all of whom have to concede Gay Knight 12 yards. With the handicap in his favour he may prove the best of the favoured division. The win and place totalisators will operate. The following horses may show up:— Belfast Handicap: Novacord. Attack will be meeting the strongest field of . his career in the Otahuhu Handicap, numbered among the acceptors oeing the Auckland Trotting Cup winner, Captain Sandy, and recent winners in Doctor Ted and Dyrham Lea. If he. is as good as reputed to be. Attack should get the thick end of the ♦purse. Prospects are:—Wairakei Handicap: Staveley’s Lad, Josedale Direct, Josie jGrattan.
