DREDGE ENDANGERED AS POND WALL BREAKS

The Snowy River dredge was placed in a dangerous position at the weekend when part of the dam wall of the dredge pond was carried away.by a sudden onrush of waters during heavy rain. At the same time, further complications were added when the power supply failed, leaving the dredge helpless. The use of a bulldozer to drag the dredge to safety was necessary before the damaged wall could be restored by the same machine.

With the heavy rain at the weekend, the Snowy River rose very rapidly, but with the breached wall repaired, dredging operations have been resumed with little time lost. The Sydney office of the Snowy River Company has announced that the payment of the dividend usually paid in February has been deferred. The chairman and secretary of the company are visiting New Zealand in connection with the request for a Government subsidy for the gold industry, or alternatively permission to sell on a free market. Last year’s dividend by the company was 6d in February, followed by a supplementary payment of 3d per share in August.
