Mr L. W. Newbold, General Manager of the State Fire and Accident Insurance Office, Wellington, is visiting Greymouth.
The funeral of the late Ellen Caroline Hornby took place at the Karoro Cemetery yesterday. Services at Sampson’s Chapel and at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. K. G. Aubrey.
The Mayor and Mayoress of Auckland (Mr and Mrs J. A. Allum), and their daughter, Miss A. Allum, headmistress of the New Plymouth Girls’ High School, will leave New Zealand about the middle of April, for a visit to Great Britain lasting six months.
Nurse Sarah Magdalen Connelly, of the staff of the Seaview Mental Hospital, Hokitika, was a successful candidate in the State final examination for psychiatric nurses held in December, 1948, according to the pass list announced yesterday.
Mr W. J. Jordan, New Zealand High Commissioner in London, has entered the Royal Masonic Hosuital, Hammersmith for X-ray examination and treatment. Mr Jordan has been receiving medical attention for a duodenal ulcer for some time.

The funeral of the late Mr William Hopkins at Karoro Cemetery yesterday afternoon was largely attended by representatives, of the Greymouth Borough Council staff, and sporting organisations with which he was connected during his lifetime. The ser-l vices at the residence, Chapel Street, and at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. T. G. Campbell, and the Druids’ service was read by Bro. Barker, district president for Westland. Included amongst the mournerwore several members of the Borough Council. Mr A. J. Fairmaid (engineer) and Mr F. H. Denton (a former town clerk). The bearers were representatives of the West Coast Rugby League, Rugby Leagu; Referees.’ Seddon Druids’ Lodge and the Borough staff. Many floral tributes were placed on the grave.
