Presentation of Medals at Grey Main School
Presenting the Seddon Medal the Grey Main School yesterday, Mr J B. Kent, M.P., said the occasion xvas an important one hat would long be remembered. He congratulated the recipient, Brian Gilberthorpe. Marsden Road. He briefly traced the origin of the medal, which, perpetrates the memory of Richard John Seddon, Premier of New Zealand from 1893 to 1906. The Watkins Memorial Medals were presented by the Rev. K. G Aubrey to Alison Jean Anderson (Dux) and George Mark Truman. Mr Aubrey said that the medals commemorated the memory of the Rev. G. T. N. Watkins, who was vicar of Greymouth from 1869 to 1879. A fund had been established and was used to instal a window at the Holy Trinity Church and also to purchase annually a gold medal which was presented to the Dux of the Mam School. More recently, however, two medals had been provided. Other awards were:— Scott Memorial Essay Prize. — George M. Truman. Original Essay Prize (Emily J. Stratford Memorial. —Ailsa Montgomery and John Hitchcock. Certificates were presented to the members of the school traffic patrol by Inspector D. W. Tolchard as follows:—John Clarke (leader), Malcolm Edward Smith, Barry Maxwell Eluett and Raymond Mylroy Armstrong. Prizes in recognition of their work as school bank prefects were presented by Mr A. K. Smith, accountant, money-order branch, Greymouth Post Office, to:—Alison Anderson, Olga Fairhall. Harold Sutherland, Shona Pettingall and Conrad ' Richards.
