S.M. Challenges Liberal M's.P. Privilege Right

PERTH, October 27. The privilege of a member, of the Western Australian State Legislative Assembly in the Police Cour't. In a reserved decision, Mr A. G. Smith, a stipendiary magistrate, ordered Mr G. H. Yates, a member of the Legislative Assembly, to produce a document relating to the police force which h e read in the Legislative Assembly last month. Mr Smith added that if the document was not produced by November 16, when a defamation case in which Mr Yates is a witness will be heard, he would then commit Mr Yates to gaol. He undertook not to produce the document to the court.

A Parliamentary committee, comprising members of the coalition Liberal and Country Party Government and the Labour Opposition is discussing the introduction of a Privilege Bill to protect Mr Yates, who is a former servicemen and has been tne Liberal member for Canning since last year.

N.Z. Woman Works On Atom Smasher

MONTREAL, Oct. 26

Little did Miss Margaret E. Mulligan, of Auckland, New _ Zealand, dream that her desire to tinker with her own car in New Zealand many years ago would lead some day to helping to assemble a 300-ton atom smasher at McGill University. Miss Mulligan is playing an _ important role in wiring the intricate control board with thousands of wire connections. Her tinkering ability Was put to good use when she became a telephone operator and developed an uncanny flair for detecting trouble on the “board.” She was visiting Canada when war broke out, being unable to obtain a passage home, worked first in an ammunition factory and then in an aircraft plant. Later, she was with the National Research Council and finally at McGill University,, where she is now completing an assignment on the huge atom smasher which will begin operation shortly. Miss Mulligan will leave for Australia shortly, where she expects to work for several years before returning to New Zealand.

Ship Stewards Gaoled For Car Conversion

WELLINGTON, Oct. 28 _ Two stewards from the Rangitiki, which arrived in Wellington .yesterday, William Henry Williams, aged 48, and Terrence John Peggat, aged 20, were each sentenced to o.ne week’s imprisonment by Mr A. A. McLachlan, S.M., in the Magistrate’s court to-day on a joint charge of converting a car to their own use in Wellington yesterday. The magistrate said there had been far too much car conversions recently, and, if he dealt with the accused leniently, the same thing would happen when other ships arrived.
