The funeral of Mrs Mary Evelyn Fitzgerald took place at Karoro cemetery yesterday. The services were conducted at the residence of her sister, Mrs Taafe, 43 Shakespeare Street and at the graveside by the Rev. K. G. Aubrey.

The last New Zealander to be repatriated by the British Ministry of War Transport arrived in Wellington this week on the “Rangitikei” from London. He is Mr. P. J. Gallivan, who left Wellington in 1939 and served in the British Merchant Navy throughout the war until his discharge in December, 1946. Part of the time he was on naval cruisers and landing-craft. Mr. Gallivin said his repatriation had been delayed because of difficulty of obtaining a passage for himself, his wife and two children.

Mr John Workman of Timaru, was 100 years of age yesterday. He was born at Penrith, Cumberland, and came here in 1884 and opened a saddlery business. For fifty years he was a lay preacher of the Methodist Church. He later became a member of the Brethren faith. He has two sons, William, aged 74, and Ernest, aged 68, of Christchurch. Mr. Workman, kept excellent health until the last few days, but is now seriously ill.
