BASKETBALL CONSIDERABLE INTEREST SHOWN IN TRIALS AT NELSON

All interest in the senior grade centred around the trials at Nelson last Saturday, when our Coast representatives combined with Buller and Hokitika for selection in the team to play Australia. Our congratulations go to M. Fyfe (Buller), P. Flaherty (Hokitika), K. Kennedy and N. Burgess (West Coast), all of whom will travel to Nelson next Tuesday to prepare for the game on Thursday. It was unfortunate that our combined team, met both" Marlborough and Nelson, instead of a combined team from these two associations, as a practised team has always a big advantage over one which has never played together’ before. However, under the circumstances the combined team put up a very good performance. At the referees’ .meeting this week it was decided to proceed with practical examinations in the junior section. Miss Stuart and Mr Armstrong were the examiners appointed. A start will be made to-day, so candidates should be prepared. Rules brought to the notice of the meeting by the N.Z. Referees’ Council were: (1) Foot on the line is correct while the ball is in play and is only penalised when the ball is being thrown in; (2) The centre throw-off can move her other foot as soon as the whistle goes, provided she keeps her toe firmly on the line. Her opponent can intercept anywhere, once the whistle goes. Referees need to absorb these points. A bounce, and a bat constitute an infringement. If a player bats a ball on then bounces it to pick it up, she will be penalised. Players should try to pick up the ball without bouncing it. The third round begins to-day, and will be played rapidly through, omitting games on September 11, as there are representative fixtures arranged for this date, in both senioi' and junior grades. Any teams' not having players in representative teams could arrange matches away for this Saturday, or visiting matches' here at Greymouth, provided early notice is given to the association.
