NEW U.S. WORLDWIDE AIR SERVICE

(Re c 9.0) WASHINGTON, May 8. Mr James Forrestal, the Defenc: Secretary, announced to-day that a world-wide military air transport service would begin operation June 1 to provide domestic and foreign a*r transport for all services and Government agencies. The service, which will be known as “Mats”, will merge the Navy and will be the first major instance o' unification of the United States armed forces. Its routes will total more than 65 thousand miles and stretch round the world via Karachi and the Mediterranean and as far north as the Arctic Circle and as far south as Rio de Janiero. Mats will have 215 Skymasters and 59 Dakota aircraft, and will later use giant cargo planes, which. will be able to transport by air fifteen jeeps. • I
