HOKITIKA NOTES

HOKITIKA, April 19.

The Gael arrived from Jackson. Bay at 3 o’clock on Saturday afternoon. The vessel brought a cargo of canned whitebait . She will load silver pine posts to complete her cargo and sailed for Wellington this afternoon at four o’clock. The combined Acquatic Clubs of Hokitika held a social evening in the Soldiers’ Hall on Saturday evening, the cups won during the season were presented. Members and visitors were present from all parts of the district. Mr J. F. McDougall,a member of Westland Hospital Board has resigned owing to leaving the district to reside in Greymouth. The Hokitika Borough Council will submit a new member to replace Mr McDougall, the seat being a town one. The death has occurred of a wellknown and respected former resident of South Westland, Mr Robert Foster second son of the late Mr and Mrs John Foster, Ross. A pupil teacher at Ross School, he then went to teach at Donoghues, and, in 1897 at Wataroa. He purchased a carrier business from Mr W. Foster and in 1912 the deceased took over the Government mail in partnership with his brother Thomas. He enlisted in the First World War and served overseas, being awarded the Military Medal in 1920. In th« same year he built tne Wataroa Hotel and later commenced sheep farming at Cooks river. After his retirement, he went to live in Christchurch, until his sudden death last week. He was buried on Friday in Bromley Cemetery, Christchurch, being accorded a military funeral. Lady Baden Powell, whose radio address last evening interested many arrives to-day at 10 o’clock at Hokitika. She will be entertained to morning tea by the ladies committee of the Hokitika company at the Red Lion Hotel, and at 10.30 will proceed to the Soldiers’ Hall where she will be welcomed by the Mayor, Mr A. E. Perry, and citizens, at a civic reception. She will take the salute of the Girl Guides, Brownies, Cubs and Scouts, as thev march past and will then address the assembly. So fine a speaker is bound to attract citizens no less than the worthy object of her mision.
