The season opened on Saturday on Victoria Square, when a fair crowd witnessed bright football. Old Boys juniors in the first game defeated Westport by 12 to 4. In the' senior game, Westport defeated Boys by 9 points to 3. Some good forward play marked the opening exchanges, the Old Boys backs missing good chances, although Westport defenders were sound. The first try came after half time when Westport, took play up in the Ola Boys 25, with the forwards pressing hard. Gettey gathered in the ball, passing out to Flynn, who raced through to score at’the corner. The kick failed. After the dron-out Old Boys forced their way through and looked like scoring, till Westport relieved with a good kick. Doncliffe, following through, took the. play right up. into Old Boys territory. Westport here got a free kick, and Grieg put the ball over. After Old Boys made a determined attack, Westport were penalised, and McHerron goaled. With good handling by. the backs, and the forwards doing ’ good work, Westport pressed Old Boys in their 25. Foi’ off-side play, Old Boys were penalised, and Greig kicked his second not, making the final score Westport 9, Old Boys 3. Just before the finish, B. Dav went off with an injury to his head. Gettey was the outstanding forward. Others who played well were Doncliffe, Brien, Croadwell, Dent. Flynn, Greig and Watson. For Old Boys, McHerron, Sullivan, Griffiths, Dillon and Wood were prominent. Mr H. Williams'was referee.
