EDUCATION BOARD PLEASED WITH DR. BEEBY’S APPOINTMENT
P.A. W’ANGANUI, February *M “I was disappointed at the attitude adopted nv some Boards in regard to the appointment of the Director of Education in New Zealand, Dr C. E Beeby, as assistant director of U.N.E.5.C.0.”, said the chairman of the Wanganui Education Board. Mr W. B. Tennent. of Palmerston North, at a meeting of the Board to-day. Mr Tennent said that at the present time, U.N.E.S.C.O. was vital in the interests of peace. Millions of children in Europe had suffered because of the war, and unless .something was done to restore order, educationally the future would be discouraging. While not agreeing with everythuig Dr Beeby had done in the educational field, Mr Tennent said he would support the appointment. and moved that the Board congratulate Dr Beeby, and also Mr A. F. McMurtrie, who has been appointed acting director of education. The motion was seconded by Mr E. R. Hodge and carried. Mr McMurtrie was formerly a chief inspector in Wanganui.
