STORM WRECKS BRIDGE IN GREY COUNTY

The recent storms throughout Westland did much damage in the area under the supervision of the Grey County Council, and at a meeting of the council yesterday, the engineer, Mr H. Higgins, stated that the bridge across Safety Creek had been completely demolished and the matter of its replacement would require urgent attention. A road through the creek for the exit of settlers had been cleared, but the replacement of the bridge was receiving attention. An estimate of the price for the work was placed at £2,500 and an application for materials had been made. The approach roads had been put in good order. A petition by eight residents of Paroa requesting that a four-inch drain be laid to their properties on the main road was favourably received by the council. The residents were not able to get a permit for the erection of ordinary septic tanks from the Health Department because of the nature of the ground nearby. The petitioners wished to erect dwellings along the sites and the council engineer said that the cost of the work would be about £l3O, and the one pipe along the frontage would serve all the dwellings which are to be built. COUNTY WATER SUPPLY Cr. J. W. Hannan asked if anything was being done about the water supply in the country. He mentioned that when the Prime Minister had been in the area he had suggested an extension of the Greymouth water supply scheme and a plan designed to cover the district estimated to cost in the vicinity of £40,000. He mentioned that the present rating was about £1 12s per head in the Greymonth borough. A meeting is being convened next week by the Greymouth Borough l Council'at which the county will be represented to go into the matter. FOOTPATH SEALING Footpath sealing in Blackball and Ahaura was reported to be progressing steadily and preparations were being made to seal the footpaths in Nelson Creek before the end of the current season. An application for the hire or purchase of the council’s motor garage at Rotomanu was refused, the engineer stating that it was his intention to shift the structure to Nelson Creek in a few days to house a new vehicle. Mr R. Honey, of Paroa. was granted permission to use a building for the salting of hides and skins. He had stated to the Health Departmenl his intention of concreting the .walls to a height of six feet in a building which was over a mile from the nearest residence, and in an area unlikely to be used for residential settlement. The engineer is to see that the Health Regulations are complied with. Two loadameters were sold to the Commissioner of Transport for £7O, it being stated that the council had little use for them. Mr W. J. Dennehy was given permission to cut green flax from road reserves between Greyraouth and Barrytown.
