Air Speed Record May Stay with U.S.

LONDON, June 24. A Ministry of Supply spokesman disclosed that there will be no 1947 British attempt to establish a new world air speed record. The Meteor jet aircraft, as it now stands had reached its limit, he said. The American claim of 623 mil’s an hour last week, which the international body had still to confirm, would not influence the present British policy, he added. Possibly in a hot climate the Meteor might attain a higher speed, but in conjunction with the Royal Ah’ Force the Ministry had decided that the result would not be worth the extra expense. There were other considerations in connection with experiment, which were proceeding continuously, and it was clear the present effective gain in speed would not be worth while.

There might be a fresh attempt on the record in 1948, the spokesman concluded.
