On Saturday: morning, while the Tiger Moth AZP Was" flying to Westport for pupil member§ ; training, tn«pilot and instructor, -Mr E. Oalcon. recived quitd’ a thrill off Punakaiki. The plane was flying at 'the cruising height of 4000 feet when it' suddenly encountered a very strong updraught which threw it up to 8500 feet in a matter of seconds. The pilot switched off the engine and with th« stick pushed forward [which normally mkes a plane go down) he found that the plane was still ascending and (travelling at an air speed of just over 100 knots. Mr Dalcon was .very relieved when he regained control of the aircraft. Mr Dalcon, who flew Mosquitos during the war, stataed that, from Poirn Elizabeth to Charleston was the bumpiest place he had ever ek ■pribnced in the flying career.
