rp [-jglTlO t.O on Jockey winter meet ing . enterprise includ ' a hurdl^^^^^^^^^^^K)S ramme proved very A mild P r i° r the opening of the jockeys hurdles were too an inspection by Mr Riccarton, who was in erecting the hurdles, steward (Mr C. L. F” E. Hawes (who and the caretaker it was disclosed that the had the correct set. In fact had a 7-inch slant, whereas the|. rules of racing only call for a 6-inch slope. The track was in splendid order, providing good winter going with some fast times for this time of the year being recorded. There was some exciting finishes and good dividends. Home Again, having his first start in the interests of his local owner. Mr T. Lalor, led all the way in the Kaimata Handicap to just squeeze home ahead of the fast-finishing Royal Flash, and return his supporters, just over’ a score and a half. The Westport-owned and trained Velvet Slipper had a very easy win in the Grandstand Handicap. His success was due in no small way to tactics adopted by H. Phillips, who stole a march on the field with just over two furlongs to go, when he quickly put a winning break on the field. Lost Art made a gallant attempt to reduce Velvet Slipper’s lead but found the task beyond him, with the rest of the field badly beaten.

Legal Rose reached the front quickly in the main sprint event, the Gladstone Handicap, and soon had a break of six lengths on the field. She looked all over a winner when she turned for home with a clear lead. It was apparent half-way down the straight that Legal Rose was doing her best, and Periwig ranged up on the outside under a vigorous ride by B. H. Brodie, and he went on to win going away by three-quarters of a length.

The meeting was a most successful one from the club’s point of view, a total of £15,864? being handled by the totalisator, compared with £12,395 when the meeting last year was held in March, representing an increase of £34691. On the occasion of the last winter meeting in 1941, when the meting was held on June 14, the totalisator handled only £3BOBl on an extremely wet day, while at the previous winter meeting on June 12, 1939, when there were also eight races and a hurdle race was included in the programme, the totalisator handled £57371. Results: — WINTER HURDLES One mile and three-quarters. 1/2 LORD BROIEFORT, Mr H. Elworthy’s b.g., BroiefortJoyous, 9.10 (D. Dawson) .. 1 5/5 GREAT LEGEND, 9.2 (J. Nicholson) 2 3/3 JOHN GAY, 9.7 (J. Trilford, of Washdyke.

Dinky Di was the smartest to begin and was followed out by John Gay, Great Legend, Lord Broiefort, with Native Song just ahead of Fire Chase at the rear of the field. Coming to the first fence John Gay joined Dinky Di in the lead and the whole field jumped it well. Dinky Di went away on the flat to a sixlengths lead and took the second fence in his stride clear of John Gay, Lord Broiefort and Great Legend. Native Song hit this fence and lost a couple of lengths. The order was the same down to the mile post, where Dinky Di was still bowlipg along freely from Great Legend, who was making a fast forward move to join John Gay in second place, with Lord Broiefort just in behind and a gap of four lengths to Native Song. The order remained unchanged until approaching the hurdle near the four furlongs, where Great Legend out-jumped the field and went into second place just three lengths behind Dinky Di, with Lord Broiefort and John Gay handy and Native Song and Fire Chase too far back to have any chance. Coming into the straight Lord Broiefort drew up to Dinky Di, with Great Legend absolutely flying on the outside. Lord Broiefort had the measure of Dinky Di who was a tired horse approaching the final fence, and jumped it together’ with Dinky Di, who hit the hurdle hard and dislodged his rider, H. Phillips. Lord Broiefort went on to win by four lengths from Great Legend and the riderless Dinky Di together, and John Gay_ eight lengths back third, and Native Song fourth. JUNE HANDICAP TROT 2.23 class.
