FERRY STEAMERS RUN IN A SOUTHERLY GALE
CHRISTCHURCH, June 29. A full gale from the South was raging in Cook Strait when the steamer express Hinemoa left Wellington on Saturday morning, according to the master, Captain D. N. McLeish. The sailing of Hinemoa from Wellington on Friday night had been postponed oy the Union Coy. and the ship left at 8.30 a.m. on Saturday, arriving at Lyttelton at 8 p.m. Captain McLeish said thal terrific seas were met in the Strait, but the Hinemoa came through well. Off Clarence river the gale eased a little, and by the time the vessel had Kaikoura Peninsula abeam, the wind had moved more to eastward enabling the Hinemoa to make good time for the remainder of the trip. For the convenience of passengers for south of Christchurch, the Railway Department arranged a special express, which left Christchurch at 11.2 p.m. on Saturday for Dunedin. Passengers for south of Dunedin were transported by buses, which left Dunedin on arrival of the express.
The Rangatira, which left Wellington at the usual time on Saturday night arrived at Lyttelton on time this morning. The Hinemoa left on her return to Wellington at .11 p.m. on Saturday.
