ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL TO-DAY’S TEST MATCH

The main interest in the soccer circle to-day rest in the first Test between New Zealand and South Africa. Local interest will largely rest upon the success or otherwise of the Westland representative team, which plays Canterbury as curtainraiser to the main attraction. The team’s performance to-day will give some indication as to whether they have any chance of being successful in the Peter Dawson Cup tournament to decide the holders of the trophy.

The team is well-balanced, containing new players and experienced players. The defence will be held together by the experience of Lee and Armstrong, whilst Scott and Mart shall will general the attacking power of the forwards. All four are familai- figures in the Westland Eleven. J. Lee has played some brilliant games in goal for Greymouth, and it is to be hoped he doesn’t become crowd shy to-day. Bailey, McMahon, and Watson are all sound defensive men. The remaining forwards, E. Dando,, McNaughton and White are all expected to turn in good displays. The Nev/ Zealand selector will be present so it behoves every man to give of his best. The team will line out as follows:— J. Lee (goal-keeper); P. Bailey, R. Lee, Captain (full-backs; R. McMahon, R. Armstrong (Vice-Capt.), R. Watson (halves) ;J. White, J. McNaughton, M, Marshall (right wing); M. Marshall (centre forward); R. Scott, E. Dando (left wing). Reserves (forward): G. Glen; Backs: J. Perrin. Both of the emergencies, Glen and Perrin are perhaps unlucky not to be in the first eleven. However their chance will come and they will be hard to displace once they are in the side. GREYMOUTH BUILDING UP With the return of W. Wallworth and J. Roche to the ranks of the Greymouth team and also with the possibility of another find, the team will be a force to reckon with in the not too distant future. SCHOOL SOCCER The West Coast Football Association has made good progress since their rejuvenation, but unless they make strenuous efforts to establish the game in the schools their effort will be short lived. The move to get footballs' for the schools is a sound one. FIXTURES LAGGING Due to postponement last week club fixtures are beginning to lag somewhat. The next round will be played on July 5, and the following Saturday Nelson will probably play Westland for the Emms Shields. The points position in the Westland Cup are as follows: —

P. W. L. D. Pts. Blackball 5 3 -«•» 2 8 Runanga 5 3 1 1 7 Taylorville 6 1 2 3 p Greymouth 6 1 5 - 2
