BASKETBALL NOTES AND COMMENTS

Stepping is still causing trouble when players have the ball. The rule states that if a player regrounds either foot after she has caught the ball, she has stopped. The important word is “after”. This means that if she has one foot on the ground -when she catches the ball, she may ground the other foot; or if she has both feet on the ground before she catches the ball she may move one foot, but if as she catches the ball she lands on both feet, then she cannot move either foot. This will not worry players who get rid of their pass quickly to their team mates, who follow up their movements and are ready for the oass. Players should move out into position rapidly, not stand still in one place and expect the ball to come to them.

The position of teams at the end of the first round is as follows: — Senior A.— Runanga A 10; Convent Old Girls A 10; Technical Old Girls A 6; Paroa A. nil; Karoro A 2; Grey Tech. High School A 8; United A 4.

Blaketown C and Blackball A and B have only just corpe into the draw, but should do well in the second round, the draw for which starts this Saturday. The first list of Rep. trials will be announced after next Saturday’s games, but these will be by no means the final list, as there are still several teams whose players have not been seen more than once in action by the selectors, who consider that once is not enough for selection, so that players are asked to watch the lists each week, and to turn out regularly if asked. As for last, year, the game rule will hold this year, that no player who misses practices will be considered for rep. teams, no matter how good a player that person may appear to be. No team can become a good working unit, if all U.S players are not prepared to practice together at every posible opportunity. The Association will be very handicapped this year with no inside accommodation available for team work if the day should be wet If any players could suggest any available hall or pavilion, the suggestion would be welcome. The following girls are asked to report to Court I for practice at 3.45 p.m. — Bands.—D. Clarke, T. Kiely, N. Patterson, M. Heslop, I. Leach, N. Burgess, A. Newton, J. Flood, I. Gilbert, J. Blackie. Plain. —A. Zampese, A. Caldwell, G. Walker, H. McMillan, L. Bailey. D. Hamilton, K. Pollock, N. Henderson, E. Clark, T. Rea. As previously stated, these lists are by no means final selections.
