Mr and Mrs J. Bruce have returned’ to Southland.

Mr H. Smith, of Runanga, has returned fiom a visit to the North Island.

Mr W. A.Craddock, who is visiting Wellington for a meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Rugby Union, will return to-day.

Mr W. J. Butler, organiser for the New Zealand Labour Party, Wellington, is visiting Greymouth. He will leave to-day for Inangahua Junction where he will meet members of the >Bullcr L. R. C. in conference.

The British Secretary of State for the Dominions (Lord Addison) has accepted an invitation from the Prime Minister of New Zealand (Mr P. Fraser) to visit the Deminion with Lady Addison at the conclusion of the Commonwealth conference at Canberra. Lord Addison’s party will travel by flying-boat, and expects to arrive in Canberra on August 26.

Because of a fan stoppage the previous night between 11 p.m. and midnight the Strongman State mine was idle yesterday. The Coal Mines Act requires that in such mines the fans must be kept running continuously for eight hours after a stoppage of an hour or more, and this requirement had not been met when the men were ready to start work yesterday morning. The men therefore returned home.

William Janies Davis, 25, formerly of Greymouth, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court at Greymouth yesterday on a charge of converting at Hokitika, on June 25, a car valued at £550, the property of Ronald William Searle, of Harihari. Detective N. Thompson said that accused had been arrested at Ross by Detective B. H. Constable and himself the previous afternoon, and further inquiries were necessary. He asked for a remand until Friday next and this was granted by Mr N. V. Lovell, J. P., who was on the Bench.

The death occurred yesterday morning of Mrs Julia Heffernan, wife of Mr Robert Heffernan, and an esteemed resident of Greymouth, after a lengthy illness. A native of No Town, she was a member of the wellknown Rundle family. She was. in her 68th year, and had resided here since 1900. She leaves a family of four sons, Emmet and Patrick (Christchurch), William (Oamaru), and Thomas (Nelson), and two daughter?, Mrs J. Wood and Mrs P. Kavanagh (Greymouth). She is survived by a brother, Mr E. J. Rundle (Gisborne), and a sister, Mrs W. Moore (Cobden). The funeral, following Requiem Mass at St. Patrick’s Church, takes place this morning.
