PENICILLIN CURE FOR SERIOUS DISEASE IN COWS

P.A. NEW PLYMOUTH, June 27. Outstanding results in the treatment of mastitis in cows with penicillin, were obtained by the deputy chief veterinary surgeon for Taranaki veterinary services, Mr H. McDonald, of Okato, when he obtained a email amount of the drug and experimented on cases early- this year. He has now obtained further supplies and is arranging - treatment for infected cows in his area. With his experimental cases Mr McDonald was 100 per cent, successful, even with cne type of mastitis which will not respond to treatment with sulfamlamode drugs. The proposed work at Okato will be the first large-scale tests made in New Zealand. Successful treatment of the disease is likely to do away with one of the greatest causes of loss to dairy farmers, and will solve a problem that has been serious for many years. Besides being an effective cure, penicillin' has been found by Mr McDonald to cause less irritation to affected quarters than any other substances used. Moreover, it does not lead to the “.drying off” of cows.
