GREYMOUTH AIRPORT

‘‘lf we want the trans-alpine air service to operate to Greymouth, we have to get busy with the extension of our aerodrome,” said the Mayor (Mr F. A. Kitchingham, at the monthly meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council last evening. He moved that the Director of Civil Aviation be written to, pointing out the necessity for the enlargement of the Karoro airport to' enable the trans-alpine service to operate to Greymouth when planes are available. The motion was seconded by Mr P. Blanchfield, and carried. Councillor J. Boustridge said they were not aiming high enough and would not get anywhere in trying to enlarge the existing facilities. It was the same thing as 'the port of Greymouth. As it was enlarged it had bigger ships utilising it and' found difficulty eventually in coping with ships of the size which normally traded to the port. The history of the port proved that that was so, and the same applied to the aerodrome. If they had an airport big enough they would have planes from all over the world landing here. Other members considered the aerodrome was more important than a feeder service airport.
