REEFTON NOTES

[Our Own Corresnonclent.l Mrs R. Ward, of Henderson, is visiting relatives at Reefton. Doctor A. Heaphy (acting Medical Superintendent) reported for the month as follows: Patients admitted 34; discharged 24; remaining in 34; out patients 103; births 6; deaths 0; X-rays 38 anaesthetics, local 7; general 9. Mrs Yellowlees' (for the visiting committee), reported the floor of the surgical ward was in bad repair, and dangerous, and the hot water cistern at the laundry needed welding. Mr Archer queried why these things were not reported to the Board and attended to right away instead of waiting for the visiting committee t > visit the hospital. The report was received.

The provision of a special siren on the ambulance was suggested by Mrs Yellowlees. On two recent occasions when it was a matter of life and death, the ambulance was forced tc dawdle behind timber lorries and cars, said Mrs Yellowlees. Mr Archer moved that a proper sounding device be attached to the machine, as the heavy gong was continually shaking off.

Mrs Hardie asked that the Council be approached, to tar seal the footpath from the hospital to Cinnamon Street, as dirt was being carried into the hospital. The chairman said he understood the Council intended sealing the path very soon. The Board decided to link up with the Laundry Research Committee. The possibility of having the work of the construction of a new nurses’ home and boiler house at the Inangahua Hospital carried out on a unit cost-plus basis, is to be investigated by the Hospital Board. This decision was made following advice that the only tender received for the work was not recommended by the Board’s architect.

Following the receipt of a tender submitted for the provision of a modern “street box” fire alarm system in Reefton, the Inangahua County Council is to request the Reefton Five Brigade to produce a plan of the town area, and mark on it the suggested alarm stations. The cost of the proposed equipment is approximately £llOO for 12 street boxes. The Inangahua County Council has decided to increase the current year's grant to the Reefton Public 1 .ibrary to £5O. This was decided following a suggestion by Rev. C. R. Sprackett (chairman of the library committee), that.a rate should be imposed to provide adequate finance for the I’brary. RUGBY FIXTURES The following Rugby fixtures will be played in • the Inangahua SubUnion’s competition during the weekend:— Reefton v. Ikamatua Brels. 12.30, at Reefton (C. Belcher); Junction v.
