U.S. Wool Duty Proposals to be Modified

WASHINGTON, May 21. The Republican Party caucus has agreed to modify the wool bill to meet, at least in part, the State Department’s objection to the imposition of an import tax on wool additional to the existing tariff. When the debate on the measure begins in the House of Representatives on Thursday, Mr. Clifford Hope (Republican), chairman of the Rules Committee, will move amendments providing, first, that the imposition of import fees shall be at the President’s discretion, and, second, that no limitation shall be imposed on the total quantities of wool or the products of wool which may enter the United States. The present bill provides for the imposition of a 5 Open cent, ad valorem tax on all imported wool. The State Department urged that this would be contrary to the nation’s moral commitments and would seriously prejudice the Geneva trade discussions. The Republicans hope that the bill as amended will satisfy American woolgrowers.
