MORE FARMS ON WEST COAST FOR EX-SOLDIERS
The first land bought in Westland for development as a soldier settlement has been taken over by the Lands and Survey Department. It is an area of rather more than 350 acres situated in the Koiterangi district.
When the land was taken over by the department it was carrying about 50 cows and some sheep. A small piece of riverbed had been added and it io the intention to develop the property into three dairy farms, each carrying about 40 cows. This district is highly regarded as dairying country.
The property has been called the Whitcombe farm settlement. It is being managed by a returned soldier, who is graded A for land settlement, and he is being assisted by a returned soldier trainee.
Forty-six returned servicemen have settled on the land on the West Coast Another 24 are waiting for settlement, but most of them have their farms in view. There has been no difficulty in rehabilitating West Coast men, most of whom are experienced in occupations which are short of labour. A few men are coming in from other districts to seek work or to start on their own account.
